What brush should I use for my dog?

Choosing the right brush depends mainly on your dog’s coat type and how it behaves over time.

There is no “one-size-fits-all” tool: using the wrong brush can create friction, break the coat, or make grooming uncomfortable for your dog.

As a general guide:

curly or wool-type coats (Poodle, Lagotto, Bichon)
→ require tools that can work through the coat without breaking it, helping prevent matting at the base

long and straight coats (Maltese, Yorkshire, Afghan Hound)
→ need tools that detangle gently without pulling or creating static

short coats
→ require simpler tools to remove dirt and loose hair without irritating the skin

Regardless of coat type, a suitable brush should:

  • glide through the coat without excessive friction
  • not scratch or irritate the skin
  • work the coat without breaking it

Technique also matters: brushing a dry, tangled coat without a detangling product can increase breakage and discomfort.

For this reason, it’s often helpful to pair brushing with a product that improves glide and manageability.
